Dell Precision 7720 Disassembly (SSD, HDD, RAM, GPU Upgrade Options)

The wireless network card Precision 7720 pre-installed an Intel 8265 wireless card, it is the 2230 M.2 card, support 802.11ac, and includes BT4.0. DELL more kind, Even if with a 2X2 wireless card, but the laptop provides three antenna cables. Users can easily upgrade to the 3X3 wireless network card.

Here’re Kingston 8GB DDR4-2677MHz RAMs, Precision 7720 have four RAM slots, the other two RAM slots under the keyboard.

If we want to continue to dismantle, we need to remove the keyboard. First of all, we use a plastic pick to unlock the keyboard frame. The keyboard frame edge has a lot of snaps, and we need to slide the plastic pick, unlock all the snaps to remove Keyboard frame.

The Precision 7720’s two M.2 slots pre-installed two 256GB Samsung PM961 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD, P/N is MZVLW256HEHP-000D1, model is MZ-VLW256A, DP/N is 03YC83.

After removing the keyboard frame, remove eight screws securing the keyboard to the palm rest.

Lift up the keyboard and place it on the palm rest.
Disconnect four cables from the motherboard.

Under the silver-gray metal plate is the other two memory slots.

In contrast, replacing these two memories will be more difficult.

Disconnect the fingerprint cable and touch cable from the motherboard.

Disconnect the power button cable.

Remove all screws (marked with P) securing the palm rest.
Insert a plastic pick under the palm rest and slide the plastic pick to remove the palm rest.

Here’s Precision 7720 palm rest.

The upper left corner is the power button module.
The lower right corner is the fingerprint identification module, NFC module, and security smart card module.

Now we can get access to the heat sink, cooling fan, and motherboard.

Precision 7720’s thermal module uses three copper pipes, two of the larger heat pipes run through two heat sinks and two heat fins.

After removing the heat dissipation module can see the graphics card and CPU, and you can see the motherboard, each side has a small board, corresponding to the left and right sides of the card slot and port.

Intel Core i7-7920HQ (Quad Core 3.10 GHz, 4.10 GHz Turbo, 8MB 45W), of course, it weld on the motherboard and can not be replaced.

The Precision 7720 is equipped with AMD Radeon Pro WX 7100 GPU. It is the MXM 3.0 card.

Here’s my NVIDIA Quadro M5000M N16E-Q5-A1 8GB GDDR5 graphics card.

I wonder whats the max GPU one can install into it? refering to RTX newer cards.

    good work.

  2. Thanks for the fantastic take-apart.
Could you share what would be a good upgrade of a 3X3 WiFi card for this machine to replace the standard Qualcomm 2X2 card?
