How to remove or replace cooling fan on HP Pavilion 17-e116dx

1. Make sure the laptop is turned off. Slide the battery release latch to release the battery.
2. Loosen the screw that secures the service cover to the HP Pavilion 17-e116dx.
3. Slide the service cover forward until it disengages from the computer. Remove the service cover.
4. Remove the screw that secures the optical drive to the HP Pavilion 17-e116dx.
5. Using a small screwdriver push the optical drive out through the screw hole. The drive will move to the left a little bit. Now you can pull the optical drive out and remove it.
6. Remove two screws that secure the hard drive. Disconnect the hard drive connector cable from the motherboard.
7. Lift up on the hard drive black tab to release the hard drive from the hard drive bay.
8. Disconnect two antenna cables and remove the screw securing the wireless card. You can take it out of its slot.
9. Remove two screws that secure the keyboard to the HP Pavilion 17-e116dx.
10. Insert a thin tool into the keyboard release hole, and then press on the back of the keyboard until the keyboard disengages from the HP Pavilion 17-e116dx.
11. Insert your fingers under the keyboard to separate the keyboard from the top cover. Turn the keyboard upside down and place it on the palm rest.
12. Unlock the keyboard cable connector and pull out the cable. You can remove the keyboard completely.
13. Remove fifteen Phillips PM2.5*7.0 screws that secure the top cover to the computer. Remove the six Phillips PM2.0*3.0 screws that secure the top cover to the computer.
14. Turn over the laptop and open the display. Disconnect the power button cable and touchpad cable from the motherboard.
15. Remove three screws that secure the top cover to the computer.
16. Start separating the top cover with a thin card, sliding the card along the edges.
17. Now remove the top cover from the HP Pavilion 17-e116dx.
18. Disconnect the LCD cable, speaker cable, USB board cable and power connector cable from the motherboard.
19. Remove three screws that secure the system board to the base.
20. Lift up and remove the motherboard.
21. Disconnect the fan cable and remove the screw securing the fan to the laptop. You can remove the cooling fan completely.
